Australia is a nation of
easy going, layback people who enjoy life, good food, good wine & beer and
of course music. As we live in the southern hemisphere Christmas is in the
middle of our Summer. So instead of rugging up in warm clothes and
roasting chestnuts over an open fireplace we have barbecues and go
swimming. For an Australian Christmas we still of course, have Santa Claus, Christmas Trees with all the decorations and a Christmas Feast. However, at our home, the turkey, ham, beef & lamb is usually served cold, with salads and prawns. Trifle, pavlova and Christmas pudding, served cold with cream and custard, usually finish off the meal. Some people also have "Christmas in July" so a traditional hot feast can be enjoyed, in the colder months....but this does not substitute for the Christian celebration held on 25 December every year....it is more a fun thing, just an excuse to indulge in yet another feast in the middle of the year! As for the Christmas music in Australia, the Traditional Christmas Carols, and winter Christmas songs are still played here and Carols by Candlelight are common in most Australian communities. The Sydney "Carols in the Domain" and the Melbourne "Myer Music Bowl Carols" are televised across the nation. Christmas music can be heard in shopping centres and schools for weeks prior to Christmas. Aussie Christmas songs have been written to convey our typical Christmas. With new words for Jingle Bells, Six White Boomers, instead of reindeer and my favourite "The Christmas Photo" really do portray what Christmas is like in our wonderful country. Here I have provided, for your enjoyment, a selection of Aussie Christmas songs and some traditional songs by Australian artists. Many of the lyrics I have transcribed myself so if any are incorrect please forgive me and indeed inform me of the correct lyrics so I can amend them.
